LPN "GAP" Training - A skills advancement couse for nurses
Unfortunately, many times the LPN has not been prepared for the management/leadership role that they will be asked to assume. Most of the accelerated training courses for LPN's do not include modules specific to management or geriatric care. This training will fill the gap between the "study for testing" and the real experience that these nurses need to succeed on a daily basis.
The course will look at two vital areas of practice - geriatrics and management. The topics presented are as follows:
Specifics of geriatric care that will be covered include areas that are of major importance to skilled nursing facilities but may only have been briefly touched on if at all in formal LPN training and education. These areas include:
· Overview of Aging. This module will cover organ systems and the aging process, typical diseases of the elderly, and aging in the community.
· Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. This module will cover cognitive changes during aging. It will also give an overview of dementia and Alzheimer's diseases. Care strategies specific to patients with these conditions will be discussed.
· Nutrition and Hydration. Eating and nutrition, changes in these needs and identification of deficits in these areas will be reviewed in this module.
· Fall Prevention. This module will identify risk factors for falls and strategies for fall prevention.
· Skin Care. This module will deal with the effects of aging on the skin. Proper skin care in the elderly and common skin conditions and treatment will be reviewed.
· Palliative Care. This module will deal with terminal illness and the goals of palliative care. Practitioner responsibilities in palliative care will be reviewed and discussed.
Specifics of Management
· Residents and their families. This session will cover understanding the effects of aging on residents' family and loved ones. It will also cover the dynamics that can enter into the relationship when facility and staff are suddenly in a position to interact with the families in a skilled nursing facility setting.
· Effective Team Building. This module will cover how to encourage team thinking. It will also cover recognizing and providing alternatives to abusive behaviors in staff, residents, and family members. Participants will learn how to work with caregivers, residents, and families on growth strategies that promote facility goals, objectives and philosophy.
· Providing Feedback. Participants will learn how to set clear expectations for caregivers, residents, and family members. This will include a discussion of assessing the behaviors of caregivers, residents, family members and self in the process.
· Dealing with Diverse Backgrounds and Experiences. The goal of this module is to increase cultural competence and to recognize and respect cultural cues. Participants will also discuss incorporating cultural diversity to facilitate quality resident care.
